Charlottesville, VA:  According to the latest study from SmarTech Markets Publishing, the market for additive manufacturing (AM) of metal powders will generate revenues of around $1.2 Billion in 2021 going on to reach $2.4 Billion in 2025.  This new report, “Additive Manufacturing with Metal Powders 2016: An Opportunity Analysis and Ten-Year Forecast,” provides a full-scale analysis of:

  • Opportunities for metal powder suppliers
  • The evolution of metal powder supply chains to meet the needs of evolving additive manufacturing markets
  • Existing and emerging metal additive manufacturing technologies
  • Metal-oriented 3D printing services
  • End user industries and applications that are adopting metal printing.

About the report:
Though some firms in 3D printing faltered in 2015, participants in the metal additive manufacturing segment continued on their path of explosive growth.
In this report, which is a follow-on to SmarTech’s widely read 2014 report on metals AM, we present a complete analysis of the metal powder additive manufacturing supply chain.

Materials covered in this report comprise steels, cobalt chrome, nickel alloys, titanium alloys, aluminum, copper alloys, and precious metals.  AM technologies analyzed include laser-based metal powder bed fusion, electron-based metal powder bed fusion, blown powder-based directed energy deposition systems, and metal powder binder jetting systems.  The report also looks at other metal technologies and how these may integrate into the majority powder market.

SmarTech’s industry-standard ten-year forecasts of powder demand are provided for all the main materials and AM technologies for both revenue and volume. Also provided are projections of install base and annual sales of machines used for metal AM by industry.

Companies covered in this report include: 3D Systems, Additive Industries, Advanced Powders & Coatings, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Airbus, Allegheny Technologies,
American Standard, APWorks, Arcam, BeAM, Bright Laser Technologies, Carpenter Powder Products, Cerevo, Concept Laser, Constellium, Cookson Precious Metals,
DanaMed, EOS, Equispheres, ExOne, Fabrisonic, Farsoon, Fonon Technologies, GE Aviation, Grismont Paris, H.C. Starck, Hilderbrand, Hoeganaes, Indiana Technology,
Insstek, Legor, LPW, Materialise, Matsuura, Metalysis, MTU Aero Engines, NanoSteel, Optomec, Phenix Systems, Ping, Plunkett Associates, Pratt & Whitney
Praxair, Progold, Puris, PyroGenesis, Realizer, Renishaw, Sandvik, SELIA Aerospace
Shaanxi 3D Technology, Sigma Labs, SLM Solutions, Space-X, Tonrud Engineering
Trumpf, Turbomeca, Xi’an Brightlaser, Xjet, and YaHao Materials & Technology

From the report:
As metal AM begins to be used for direct manufacturing and not just prototyping, many powder producers are beginning to match powders not just with particular print processes, but also the actual end use parts for which they are intended. Smaller producers wanting to specialize in additive have led the market in investing money to build new powder production equipment and optimizing these designs to produce powder specifically for AM, rather than simply selling acceptable powder already produced on existing equipment (at low yields) at a very high markup.

Spurred by the growth in metal AM, there is now an increasing variation in metal powder production for additive manufacturing, with entirely new processes being tested as well as development of purpose-built variations of traditional atomization processes. Investment across the metal powder production market is being catalyzed by the evolution in metal AM towards advanced and serial manufacturing applications in medical, aerospace, energy, and more.
Perhaps the most significant regional growth story in metal additive manufacturing over the course of the last year has been in Asia, which is expected to account for $316 Million in metals powders by 2021. China is emerging as especially important. Here Bright Laser Technologies has reportedly quadrupled its revenue in two years. Also, in 2015, the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration approved the use of additively manufactured hip replacement cups manufactured in China and the Chinese military has utilized a variety of metal AM technologies to manufacture critical components for military aircraft.
